Interactive Metronome
The Interactive Metronome (IM) is an advanced brain- based assessment and
treatment program developed to directly improve the processing abilities that
affect motor planning and sequencing. Over the course of treatment, children
learn to:
- Focus and attend for long periods of time
- Increase physical endurance and stamina
- Filter out internal and external distractions
- improve ability to monitor mental and physical actions as they are
occurring
- Progressively improve performance
Improving rhythmicity and timing through IM may also result in significant
improvements in the development of cognitive and physical skills that are
important for performance in many areas including:
- Motor function
- Bilateral coordination
- Sensory integration
- Motor planning and sequencing
- Balance
Graphomotor
Handwriting skills require physical strength and coordination, finger dexterity,
visual perceptual abilities, attention and memory. After identifying the child's
specific needs the therapist will design a program of activities utilizing
specialized techniques and skills and may include the use of adaptive equipment
to improve the child's handwriting.
The Sensory Experience
Life is a sensory experience. In order to respond to new experiences in the
world around them, children must receive, interpret, and respond to sensory
information from all of their sensory systems:
- Visual (seeing)
- Aural (hearing)
- Olfactory (smell)
- Gustatory (taste)
- Tactile (touch)
- Proprioceptive (sense of body in space)
- Vestibular (movement/ balance)
If the information from the environment is ineffectively received or processed
it can interfere with how a child learns, develops, and behaves. Our program
provides specific sensory experiences to address a child's difficulty in
processing environmental information.
The Physical Experience
Good core (trunk) strength is necessary for well executed movement. By
strengthening the core muscles children can move one body part while keeping
the others stable. Our specialized gym and equipment enable us to challenge
and develop the child's strength, coordination and agility.
The Behavioral Experience
Poor social communication, language delays, sensory processing
differences, and inflexible learning styles influence the development of
emotional regulation.
Appropriate play and social skills are important for acquiring developmental
milestones and developing meaningful relationships.
Understanding children's behavior enables the people who care for them to
intervene more effectively.
An important feature of our therapy includes the education of caregivers in
the use of our therapeutic approach when dealing with their children on a day to
day basis. Individual and group sessions are provided to improve play
behaviors, social interactions and the critical thinking necessary in everyday life.
